The Northern Illinois Jobs With Justice Coalition held a rally in front of the Illinois State Capitol Building on Tuesday May 29th. The purpose of the rally was to point out the failure of Gov. Quinn, Speaker Madigan and the Democratic Party to lead the state toward a positive solution to the teacher pension issue. In addition, the speakers also pointed out that no one in the House or Senate are broaching the subject of the only real solution to the debt problems of the State-new revenue. The Coalition has put forward several proposals to generate the revenue needed to fund our States’ budget. They include a “graduated income tax”, a “transaction tax” on the Commodities Exchange among other solutions. For more information please contact: www.nijwj.org.

This video shot on day one of THE ROCKFORD TEACHERS STRIKE shows the solidarity and support of the community for the teachers. Corporate reform has gripped this town for three years of brutal reprisals, firings, and school board shenanigans. One teacher’s courage is emblematic of the push back in bedrock USA! Thousands protested, and the board was forced to give a fair contract to teachers who have been 11 months without. Teachers speak as one to say, “We’re not gonna take it!”
This is a tremendous win against the corporate reform agenda which aims at destruction of teachers unions.

The public are excluded from the process of administration of public funds for education. Without notice, public comment was reduced to 1 minute. Hundreds of people were kept outside. The Board acts in closed session to forward its privatization agenda without regard for students, teachers, parents or the future of Rockford. District for sale!

This event in Chicago, on January 11, 2011, marks the tenth anniversary of the opening of Guantanamo detention center. Prominent speakers share perspectives on the impact of these ten years on the nature and realities of our democracy. Prominent voices from the occupy movement, from social, humanitarian and immigrant rights movements as well as from a victim of torture bring to light of day information we all need. This demonstration is a ceremony of not forgetting. The NDAA makes all Americans vulnerable to the same treatment given the Guantanamo detainees.
