{"id":5494,"date":"2013-04-08T19:13:03","date_gmt":"2013-04-09T00:13:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.progressivefox.com\/?p=5494"},"modified":"2018-08-16T15:49:14","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T20:49:14","slug":"when-did-it-become-acceptable-to-take-money-from-old-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.progressivefox.com\/?p=5494","title":{"rendered":"When did it become acceptable to take money from old people?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            \n\t\t<div class=\"ngg-gallery-singlepic-image ngg-right\" style=\"max-width: 165px\">\n\t\t\t    \t<a href=\"http:\/\/www.progressivefox.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/laesch_union\/pat-herrmann_web.jpg\"\n\t\t     title=\"Pat Herrmann from rally at Tom Cross&#039;s office May 2012\"\n             data-src=\"http:\/\/www.progressivefox.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/laesch_union\/pat-herrmann_web.jpg\"\n             data-thumbnail=\"http:\/\/www.progressivefox.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/laesch_union\/thumbs\/thumbs_pat-herrmann_web.jpg\"\n             data-image-id=\"584\"\n             data-title=\"Pat Herrmann\"\n             data-description=\"Pat Herrmann from rally at Tom Cross&#039;s office May 2012\"\n             target='_self'\n             class=\"ngg-fancybox\" rel=\"9fa947ce8a325a164f63b25123d3ce93\">\n            <img class=\"ngg-singlepic\"\n             src=\"http:\/\/www.progressivefox.com\/wp-content\/gallery\/laesch_union\/dynamic\/pat-herrmann_web.jpg-nggid03584-ngg0dyn-320x240x100-00f0w010c010r110f110r010t010.jpg\"\n             alt=\"Pat Herrmann\"\n             title=\"Pat Herrmann\"\n              width=\"165\"               \/>\n    \t<\/a>\n\t\t      <\/div>\n        I first heard Pat Herrmann, a retired art teacher from Wheaton, Illinois, ask the question, &#8220;when did it become acceptable to take money from old people?&#8221; during a public pension discussion hosted by the <a title=\"DuPage Coffeehouse\" href=\"http:\/\/dupagecoffeehouse.org\/\">DuPage Coffeehouse<\/a>.\u00a0 Herrmann is a deep-thinking activist.\u00a0 The multiple messages on her signs reflect her ability to conduct careful research and see the bigger picture.\u00a0 Her question about taking money from old people reflects her ability to see the human impact; something lawmakers don&#8217;t see.<\/p>\n<p>As the Illinois General Assembly debates how much money they will strip from Illinois teachers&#8217; pensions and<a title=\"Huffpo Chained CPI\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/04\/05\/chained-cpi-seniors_n_3021606.html\"> President Obama puts deep cuts to Social Security <\/a>on the table, I was reminded of Hermman&#8217;s important question.\u00a0 If you have not signed the petition to tell President Obama to take Social Security cuts off of the table, <a title=\"AFL-CIO Petition\" href=\"http:\/\/act.aflcio.org\/c\/18\/p\/dia\/action3\/common\/public\/?action_KEY=6117\">now would be a good time to do it by following this link<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Of course those reaching into the pockets of old people don&#8217;t want to talk about how this will impact living, breathing human beings.\u00a0 They want to talk about numbers, budgets and other inhuman things.\u00a0 Consider Tom Cross&#8217;s recent <a href=\"http:\/\/teacherpoetmusicianglenbrown.blogspot.com\/2013\/04\/tom-cross-letter-in-chicago-tribune.html?showComment=1365421485121\">letter to the <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em><\/a> that makes this all sound like a tragic math problem.\u00a0 Cross, after 20 years in Springfield, takes no responsibility for the state&#8217;s past 40+ years of delinquency.\u00a0 I am not giving Democrats a free pass on this either.\u00a0 The primary drivers of pension reform in Springfield are Mike Madigan, Pat Quinn, Elaine Nekritz and Dan Biss (all Democrats).\u00a0 All of them, Democrats and Republicans, are singing from the same sheet of music.\u00a0 Watch the video of Bernie Sanders below the fold.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In Washington the only one <a title=\"Huffpo Sanders\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/04\/05\/bernie-sanders-obama-budget-social-security_n_3023799.html\">stepping up and speaking for working, middle class people<\/a>, is the Socialist, Bernie Sanders.\u00a0 In Illinois, we don&#8217;t have any elected Socialists so we are left with Democrats and Republicans who are unwilling or unable to challenge the very idea of &#8220;taking money from old people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Just ask Biss, Nekritz, Cross, or Madigan and either one will quickly give the &#8220;false choice&#8221; argument that we need to choose between cuts in public schools or cuts in pensions.\u00a0 None of these folks have proposed making good on the past 40+ years of non-payment to the pension system or taxing the rich.\u00a0 None of them broach the idea of taxing the rich or repealing the $78 million tax break that the incredibly profitable CME enjoys. Cross wants everyone to move their money into a risky 401K plan that will produce higher returns for Wall Street hedge fund managers.\u00a0 Madigan wants to shift the cost onto property owners via his &#8220;tax shift&#8221; proposal. Nekritz and Biss both seem willing to carry water for either, gambling that this will somehow advance their careers.
